Being a Young Genealogist

I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their comments on my blog, and I want to address a common theme in the comments; my identification - being a young genealogist.

I by no means meant to exclude anyone; in fact my aim was the opposite. I'm new to this and I want to learn everything I can, and this is why I became affiliated with GeneaBloggers. The site is fantastic as it takes me to blog posts that interest me, whilst drawing people to my blog where hopefully their (your) comments will aid my research.

Now for a little bit about me: I'm half way through a degree in Mechanical Engineering, and I watch motor racing all day every Sunday whilst cross stitching. I'm not your average 21 year old! I'm very used to being on my own and doing my own thing, but it's always nice to meet people like myself; whether it's girl engineers, motor racing fans, or genealogists that are close to my own age.

I want to thank Niall and Lauren for reaching out and letting me know I'm not the only young genealogist from the UK! And I also want to thank everyone else who has commented and put a smile on my face! Here's hoping I begin to talk about something interesting!

  1. Hey Katelyn, I cross stitch too! Not much of a motor racing fan though! re. your comment about my spreadsheet. I'm having trouble with my print screen function at the mo, but if you email me your address (address on my blog) I'll send it to you if you like. Excel is really useful - so much easier to organise your info and you don't have to battle with word formatting and so on. I'm using it increasingly for my genealogy stuff. Lauren

  2. Thank you Katelyn for the mention. I'm sadly not a fan of cross-stitching or motor racing! I look forward to your posts and hope I can help where I can. Niall

  3. Hi Katelyn! I just found your blog today. I also frequently find myself the youngest genealogist around by several decades. I'm 23, and started genealogy when I was 16, when I was assigned a family tree project in history class.

I noticed a few posts back you mentioned joining WikiTree. Are you still on there? WikiTree is my main genealogy tool, the first place I put all of my discoveries. I love it so much I recently started working for them! I'm the user group coordinator. :)

I look forward to following your blog!

    1. Yep I'm still on WikiTree. I hope to use it accurately so I haven't been updating until I upload the information to FTM 2012.

What does being the user group coordinator involve? Sounds exciting!

    2. Well we have 3 Google groups where people collaborate on common ancestors, for example, there's one group that works on the Mayflower passengers and their families. I coordinate the groups and do what I can to make their work easier. :) I definitely enjoy it!

  5. I'm 30 which means I'm not *that*young anymore, but I am young for a genealogist! :-) We went to WDYTYA live a few weeks back and we didn't see anyone younger than us all day!
